Background of the study
Yoruba idioms are embedded with rich cultural significance and their meanings are often context-dependent. In rural communities of Oyo, these idioms serve as vehicles for traditional wisdom and social norms, with contextual cues playing a crucial role in their interpretation. This study examines how factors such as local customs, community practices, and situational contexts influence the meaning of Yoruba idioms. Fieldwork in rural Oyo reveals that listeners rely on shared cultural knowledge and environmental cues to disambiguate idiomatic expressions, ensuring effective communication and the preservation of cultural identity (Olusola, 2023). The research utilizes recorded conversations, storytelling sessions, and participant interviews to analyze how meaning is negotiated in everyday discourse. By mapping out the contextual variables that affect interpretation, the study aims to highlight the importance of maintaining traditional contexts in language use and to propose strategies for preserving the semantic integrity of Yoruba idioms in rural settings (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although contextual meaning is central to the interpretation of Yoruba idioms, there is limited research on how these meanings are negotiated in rural communities in Oyo. Preliminary findings suggest that modernization may disrupt traditional contextual cues, leading to altered interpretations and potential loss of cultural nuance. This study seeks to document these phenomena and assess their implications for cultural preservation.
Objectives of the study

  • To document common Yoruba idioms used in rural Oyo.
  • To analyze the contextual factors that influence their meanings.
  • To recommend strategies for preserving traditional interpretative contexts.
    Research questions
  • What are the prevalent Yoruba idioms in rural communities?
  • How do contextual cues affect their interpretation?
  • What impact does modernization have on traditional meaning?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of context in sustaining the rich semantic heritage of Yoruba idioms, supporting cultural continuity and enhancing effective communication in rural communities (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the examination of contextual meaning in Yoruba idioms among rural communities in Oyo and does not extend to urban or online contexts.
Definitions of terms

  • Contextual Meaning: Meaning derived from situational and cultural cues.
  • Idioms: Fixed expressions with non-literal meanings.
  • Yoruba Language: An indigenous language spoken in southwestern Nigeria.
